Moulton News

W I LogoA reminder to existing members, and a welcoming invitation to new residents in the village, and any others who are not yet members, that our meetings take place on the second Monday of every month, and commence at 7.45pm – the plans for the rest of the year are shown below, including our open meetings when we welcome non-members, both male and female.

The July meeting is in fact a Summer Barbeque at the Kings Head, at no cost to members, but is open to all, guests being welcome at a cost of L10 a head, but please let me know in advance if you wish to attend and/or bring guests so that I can give Tony accurate numbers.

As usual, there is no actual meeting in August, but instead there will be an outing on Sunday the 8th August to Tiptree Jams and the Beth Chatto Gardens. There is already sufficient interest to book a coach, which will depart from the Village at around 9.30am and return before 6pm in the evening. Please complete a booking form or contact Linda Earl as soon as possible if you wish to join us on this trip. Telephone Linda on 01638 750727 or email at linda.earl@waitrose.com

Best wishes Elissa Rampling Secretary 01638 552631 or elissa.rampling@gmail.com

Old WI News

The last twelve months have really flown by and looking back it has been a really successful and enjoyable year. The Committee work hard to ensure that the speakers and outings reflect the interests of the members and we seem to have achieved this as the membership continues to grow. We held our AGM in November and members shared their enthusiasm for the new 2010 Programme, which I have listed below.

Attending any of our meetings as a guest can be a really good way to get to know other people in the village. We know that walking in to a meeting can sometimes be a bit daunting, especially if you are new to the village, so Committee members are happy to collect anyone beforehand and to accompany them if they would like this. Just let me know in advance so I can make arrangements.

As we are all aware from January the meetings will be held in the School whilst the new village hall is being built. I would like to thank Mr Englebright, Headteacher for his support during the next six months or so.We are aware that it will be further distance for some members to walk, so if anyone needs assistance with transport during this time or in the future please don’t hesitate to give me a call and I will arrange lifts.

We would like to welcome non-members both male and female to our ‘Open Evenings’ as detailed below.

The WI to many people may conjure up a vision of older people singing Jerusalem and making jam. Or you may think of glamorous women posing for the latest Calendar Girls poster! In Moulton I would like to think we are quite different. We don’t sing together, haven’t got around to making jam yet and I will leave it to you to decide on the glamorous part!

We are, though, a newly formed group who are feeling our way towards making our Moulton WI something special that will appeal to women of all ages in the village. To be successful we have a small committee who meet regularly and plan the programme, events and outings for the year in Moulton, while being closely aligned to the Suffolk West and National WI. Each meeting we inform members quite briefly about any national update, Suffolk West WI events and then we have a speaker or a demonstration. We start at 7.45pm and finish at around 9.45pm. We have a refreshment break during the evening and usually have homemade cakes or biscuits.

We have managed to combine talks, demonstrations and visits so that we have catered to the different tastes of all our members and are always open to new ideas. We have also welcomed new members and have had ‘open evenings’ when husbands, partners and visitors are warmly welcomed.

Recent topics have ranged from the ‘Life of a Racehorse’, a visit by the Owl Sanctuary with a barn owl, and a superb talk by Fran Saltmarsh on historical ladies underwear. We had a visit to the National Stud in Newmarket, have enjoyed an afternoon on the river from Ely with a cream tea included and also listened to a fabulous speaker called Marie Carden with Blue – her Dog for the Disabled. This was an inspirational evening where courage and sheer determination were evident in a lady with quite severe disabilities who would not give up but showed a real fighting spirit and a remarkable sense of humour.

In September we will have a cookery demonstration by Dale Atkinson who previously cooked all the food for our 2008 Christmas social evening, which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. In October we will be meeting in Ely for a ‘Ghost Walk’, in November we have our AGM with a speaker and in December we will have a Christmas table flower decoration demonstration.

Next year we are planning another interesting and varied programme.

Each year the National WI ask the members for suggestions for a national campaign and this year has been ‘SOS for Honey Bees’. This campaign calls for more to be done to stop the decline of the honey bee. The decline of the honey bees represents a major loss in biodiversity, as honey bees are not only responsible for producing honey, but play a vital role in pollinating plants.

Some facts about bees:

  • • Approximately a third of our human diet is directly dependent on bees
  • In the natural environment bees are responsible for pollinating around 90% of the wild plants that produce seeds and fruits on which birds and wild animals depend
  • Bees are 80 million years old; man is 4.5 million years old
  • There are 22,000 named species of bees in the world; 280 in the UK
  • The smallest of the world bees would fit on a single antenna of the largest bee
  • In the UK the majority of bees are solitary including a leafcutter bee, a tawny mining bee, a carpenter bee and a mason bee.

If you are unable to get down to the village hall for any reason but would like to attend a meeting, please give me a call and I will try to arrange transport. The meetings are always held on the second Monday of the month in Moulton Village Hall. If you require any further details please contact either Jane or me and we will be pleased to answer any questions.
