There has been a front page article recently in the East Anglian Daily Times about Village shops which highlighted the worrying situation in West Suffolk.
Three out of four villages in the St Edmundsbury District no longer has a shop or Post Office! and the situation is likely to get worse experts are warning.
These shocking figures were unveiled in an economic survey carried out by the St Edmundsbury Borough Council.
The report states that 74% of the Borough’s Parishes do not have a food shop or General Store, and that 73% no longer have a Post Office.
A similar picture is emerging elsewhere in the County, and the St Edmundsbury report warned that this decline is expected to get worse.
Most of these services are only available in the Towns these days, and with the decline of bus and other public services, the situation for our rural population is getting more and more difficult.
The demise of the village shop and Post office has been amazingly fast, accelerated of course by the last Government, but with the rise and rise of the Supermarket, the writing has been on the wall for many years.
Those of us who have an active village shop and Post Office often do not appreciate the enormous effect it has on the whole social structure of the village – from the purely social side of it being a meeting place for all and sundry, people mix and meet there all the time – news is passed on, village events are better ‘advertised’ by word of mouth – and the village has a true centre – you would be amazed by the enormous gap that is left when a village loses its shop and Post Office – not only from losing the facility, but even worse by losing the socialising and meeting place that it provides.
An example is in the Forest Heath district – there is no longer a single village shop or Post Office on the A1101 between Mildenhall and Bury St Edmunds !, and many of these villages no longer have a Pub.
Once a village shop closes – IT DOES NOT OPEN AGAIN ! – We are very lucky here in Moulton, but the old phrase “USE IT OR LOSE IT” is one we ALL must keep in mind – it even helps to add value onto our property!
Going Abroad, Paying a Bill...? The Post office does of course offer a wide and varied range of services – including COMMISSION FREE foreign exchange. Bill payments, telephone top-ups and a range of Banking facilities are other attractions!
Café Society!vThen of course you MUST avail yourself of the the fast growing “cult” ofthe “Chez Dillon” cafe society – join the elite and sit and enjoy freshly ground coffee whilst watching the world (and Moulton) go by......... ! Make every day a nice day at the place where it all happens!
