HELP NEEDED WITH DELIVERING THE NEWSLETTER

We have been very lucky over the past few years to have had the help of our post ladies with the distribution of the Moulton Newsletter. Unfortunately this is now no longer possible and it would be very helpful if someone from each road/area of Moulton felt able to help post it through people’s letterboxes in their area. It is only four times per year! If you can help, please could you contact Jennie Wallis as soon as possible on 07768 043135.

Moulton Village Fun Day – Sunday 25th May

It was a wet and windy day, not the nice spring weather usually experienced on Fun Days, but with the support of the Village an incredible £3,400 was raised. Photographs

On Wednesday 9th July the MMC called an open meeting at the Kings Head Public House to discuss the distribution of the day’s profit. Representatives of those Clubs and Organisations that had participated on the day attended the meeting, chaired by Tony Jones of the MMC. He opened the meeting by thanking everyone for their sterling efforts, saying that this year they certainly deserved the benefit of the day’s profits and outlined some thoughts by the MMC for the distribution.

Following a very open discussion in which a number of Club representatives made their cases for financial support, the meeting agreed that it would be fair to all if each Club or Organisation that had participated, be offered the sum of £250, leaving approximately £1200 which should be held by the MMC and be made available for granting at the discretion of the MMC. This money would be available as discretionary grants over the next two years, to any of the participating organisations who submitted a suitable request to the MMC.

Concluding the meeting, Tony Jones thanked all the sponsors for their superb support and also thanked all those who with their splendid efforts under some very unfavourable conditions, had produced a special day that was not only enjoyed by all those attending but also raised a fantastic sum to benefit many oft the village organisations.

Moulton Community Walks – 14th June 2008

In near to perfect conditions a record number of walkers from all parts of the country took part in this year’s event sponsored by Newmarket Rotary and The West Anglia Sports Partnership.

The entry list contained some big names from the race walking world, but it was local walkers who entered as ramblers and amblers who caused a stir amongst the race walk enthusiasts. Geoff Dobson, Ann Ashby, Julia Frost, Agnieszka Bartyzell and Julie Middleton all completed the testing five mile course in under an hour, which is the first standard of achievement for race walking. The finishing list below shows that others were not far short of the mark, but most importantly, the satisfaction for most was completing their own personal challenge.

The thirteen children who participated in the junior walks all showed lots of endeavour and were presented with their medals by John Warhurst Commonwealth 20 mile champion in 1974.

European Masters Champion Ann Belchambers of Hillingdon was the first lady home stopping the clock at 49.14 and Aldershot ’s Nick Silvester also a European Masters Champion the first man in 39.16, whilst in the team competitions Enfield ladies and Ilford men collected the medals. Moulton ladies did so well that they grabbed the bronzes!

The racing Industry Team award was won by Julie Middleton, Carolynn Anderson and Kit Cunliffe representing the Darley Stud.

In addition to a number of former internationals there were eight games medallists on hand to mark the final race by sixty-nine year old four-time Olympian Paul Nihill who dominated World and British walking during the sixties and seventies setting records and winning medals at all the major Games.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT REVIEW IN SUFFOLK

The provision of local services may be changing and the views of Suffolk residents are requested. Are you concerned about how your local services are delivered? Would you like the opportunity to debate the changes that the Boundary Committee is proposing for Suffolk?

Two options are being offered.
1. Two councils: one for Ipswich, Felixstowe and the surrounding Villages and one for the rest of the county.
2. One Council for the whole County.

The unitary authorities would be responsible for providing all services. If there is sufficient interest, the Parish Council will invite District and County Council representatives to address a Village Meeting to explain the options on offer and provide any other relevant information, so that an informed debate can take place. The debate would be about your views and opinions and form the basis of the Parish Council’s response.

Please let the Clerk or Chairman know whether you would be willing to attend a meeting in August or early September at the Village Hall, by emailing Lorraine Stone on moultonpc@ukonline.co.uk (tel. 01638-720971) or Bill Rampling on bill_rampling@yahoo.com (tel. 01638-552631). You can view the Boundary Committee’s consultation document at www.boundarycommittee.org.uk

And now for something completely different !

Come and help clear the rubbish from the hedgerow beside the football pitch ready for tree planting in the autumn. There will be jobs for all ages and abilities - bring your own tools. It’s an opportunity to meet other parishioners and feel good about your own input into keeping our village one of the most attractive in Suffolk Date: Saturday 9th August 08 meet at the Village hall 10.00am for approx. two hours

VILLAGE HALL REDEVELOPMENT—UPDATE

The design of the new hall is nearing completion and the final architectural layouts should be available in the next 2/3 weeks after taking into consideration the requirements of the building control officer and structural engineer. The building services details are progressing a little more slowly because we want to use heat pump technology for the heating and hot water requirements in an effort to reduce running costs. This is causing some design issues which, I’m sure, will be resolved soon.

As the site is adjacent to an ancient road it is to be subject to an archeological survey before and as work proceeds. Unfortunately, we have to pay for this which is an added expense we didn’t expect. As far as funding is concerned, we expect the project costs to be in the order of £400000 of which the village has contributed just under a third through donations and fund raising and FHDC have confirmed that they will contribute a third.

We are hoping to get the final third from the Big Lottery Fund, the results of which should be known by 4th August. Also, we understand that approximately £100000 may be available from the developers once work has commenced on the Friskies site at Kentford

Albert Shipton, our booking clerk, will be standing down at the AGM in September. Albert has done sterling work sorting out licences, agreements and generally organising the booking and payment procedures, for which we are both grateful and thankful. However, we do need a person to take over this important role and if anyone reading this would like to take it on, please get in touch with either Albert or myself. It is important that this role is filled because the hall cannot function effectively without a booking clerk.

Next MVHMC meeting 12th May 2008, AGM 15th September 2008.

NATS consultation

Last night I attended the excellent meeting in Kirtling Village Hall arranged by local parish councils to discuss the NATS consultation, due to pressure from our local MP's Richard Spring and Jim Paice along with several local Conservative District and County Councillors from both Cambridgeshire and Suffolk the consultation period has been extended to the 19th June.  I urge everyone to circulate the information attached and encourage as many local residents and parish councils to take part and respond to this consultation. Lisa.

PANTHERS FOOTBALL CLUB 2007/8

We have had two teams this year, the under 9’s and under 16’s Under 9’s played 20 games this season and unfortunately lost them all. However they were one of the very few teams, if not the only one, that had been playing for less than a year; many of the other teams were far more experienced. When we played similar teams in terms of size with only a little more experience we fared pretty well and had much closer games. There was a noticeable improvement in performance when we started to play each team again with some of the opposing coaches commenting on the improvement the boys had made and some of the scores did not reflect their performance.

The team had a bowling trip at Xmas and a trip to laser tag at the end of the season. We had the lads v dads matches and presentations on 7th June. The following players won end of season trophies: Managers player - Jacob Talbot; Most Improved Player- Jack Steer; Supporters Player – Ryan Middleton; Players Player – William Jeffrey

Under 16’s Played 11 league games and two knock-out cup games. Finished in 7th place in the league which didn’t reflect their efforts. We had some matched where we had 8 or 9 players and at those games the lads rose to the challenge and gave it their all. Our goalie, Jack Quy has been recommended for the County team by one of the referees.

It is their last season and we had a lads v dads match and presentation bbq on 8th June which was well attended. The following players won end of season trophies: Managers Player – Jack Quy; Most Improved Player – Darren Frost; Supporters Player – Tom Ashby; Players Player – Jack Quy; Will Armitage trophy – Rory James

A Paintballing day is planned as a final fun day for the team. Fundraising this year was linked with the Moulton Fun Day; we held a 6-aside football competition which was well attended despite the awful weather; we also secured funds from the Suffolk County Council locality budget.

All committee members, most importantly to Keith and Steve for all the coaching and work they have put in over the last year. On a personal note it has been a pleasure working with the committee this year, a big thank you to all committee members for their hard work and especially to the coaches Keith and Steve. Thanks also to Doug James for cutting the grass before matches all the supporters. Ann Ashby, Chairman Photograph

MOULTON W. I.

Over the last six months the Moulton WI has grown in members and we have enjoyed a variety of speakers to suit all tastes.

Our year began with an Antiques Roadshow where members brought along something ‘old and interesting’. We learned lots of history about our familiar treasures and I think most of us would have sat and listened for longer given the chance. Later meetings have included hearing about the work of the Flying Doctors in Zambia where the average life expectancy is 38 years of age. We followed that with learning about the importance of good diet and nutrition. In July we were delighted to welcome eight new guests to our meeting and we all very enthusiastically made a simple flower decoration. For some of us, including myself, this was a real achievement.

So what’s next? In August we have been invited to a sheepdog demonstration by Phil and Jenny Sabin and a walk around their farm. We have other treats planned including a talk about costume by Fran Saltmarsh, a wine tasting in October and lots more. We have also visited the Cambridge Botanical Gardens and Emmanuel

College gardens, which was thoroughly enjoyable especially as it was the only day in the week when the sun shone and it hardly rained.

We have been invited to lots of other events and outings with other WI’s around the area who have all welcomed us to their meetings, and we will be inviting other local WI members to join us in a trip to the Pantomine in January.

The feedback we have had to date from members has been positive; we are making new friends; learning new skills and broadening our knowledge on a range of topics. We also have a voice at national level and can support campaigns to help our rural communities and environment.

We meet on the second Monday evening of the month at 7.45 – 9.45 in the Village Hall. Non members are welcome to join us.

Moulton NewsHugh and Mary Clark

It was pleasing to read in the last edition of the Moulton News, that Hugh and Mary Clark had received recognition for their outstanding service to the Church. I wonder how well it is known however that Mary has also, for the last 30 years plus, organized the upholstery classes, which are held in the village hall during the winter months. The classes, which run from 10.00 a.m. - 12.30 p.m. on a Thursday morning are a delightful mix of industry, friendly chat and of course coffee. Some beautiful work has been completed and the lessons have now been expanded to include curtain making, patchwork and cushion making. Mary has decided that she would like to step down as organiser, although she will still be attending the sessions, and many thanks must go to her for maintaining this valuable asset to the village. The group is always pleased to welcome new people and full details can be obtained from:-
