Village News in brief

For those of you who did not know, The Kings Head is now buzzing! Excellent Carvery on Sundays, and excellent fresh Fish & Chips on Friday, not to mention the equally excellent food on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday !

Kathy and Mike Dillon at the shop are now sponsoring The Panthers Football Team strip – (other sponsors are most welcome.) They are now playing on Saturdays, see more detail inside. It can never be said too often though, don’t forget that the shop is only there if YOU use it ! ( if not, YOU lose it!)

The Village Hall Committee are urgently seeking a new volunteer to run the Moulton Village Hall 200 club! See inside for details – and the Club also needs new members to support it !

The new WI recipe book is now available ! with some 120 exclusive and quite delicious recipes, just in time to make your ideal Christmas present – telephone Fran on 750190 or Sally on 554382 to reserve your copy.

A fantastic evening was had by all (those lucky enough to get a ticket! ) at the Harvest Supper, when a memorable caberet of a conversation between Lord Nelson (Mick Lambourn-Brown) and Hardy (Bob Saltmarsh) was performed to perfection. Book early next year!

The same two tireless workers for this village, together with another of the same ilk, Bill Rampling, our dedicated Parish Council Chairman, organised and “lit” a magnificent firework display which was well attended at the Kings Head.

Not a lot of people seem to know this, but a colossal amount of work and effort is put in by a comparatively very few people on your behalf to keep Moulton as the attractive, desirable, interesting and thoroughly pleasant place to live in that it is!

MOULTON NEWS is the main means of getting news and views out and about amongst you all in the Village. But we do NEED YOUR NEWS AND VIEWS. Please do not hesitate to offer them to us! – at the moment no one does! You can even be anonymous if you wish! My thanks yet again go to Jill Goodwin’s contribution, including her interview with Fran & Bob Saltmarsh, and her Archive work !

Hugh Clark 1918– 2010

Moulton Village recently lost a very dear friend when Hugh Clark of French Hall Farm sadly passed away in February 2010.

Hugh was born on in 1918 in Hunstanton, Norfolk; however he spent his childhood in Wiltshire where his father worked as a poultry farm manager. He left home at 16 and for the first two years worked as a farm pupil near Chepstow race course. He then worked at several different farms to gain experience. Read more here

School in Moulton Back to school/Back in time

This week has seen the end of the school summer vacation and local children returning to Moulton School for the beginning of another educational year. Therefore I thought it an appropraite time to check the archives of the Moulton Newsletter for information relating to the history of the Moulton School.

We start as far back as 1818 where an account can be found of there being a one day school and a Sunday School for 20 local pupils although where the schooling took place is unclear. Read more here...

70th Anniversary of the Declaration of War with Germany

The country is at present in the throes of commemorating the 70th anniversary of the declaration of War with Germany. Dame Vera Lynn is in the charts with ‘her album “We’ll Meet Again” and a new war time series about the Land Army is to be screened on TV.

Many of the Moulton residents will have their own memories of the war and a number of their personal stories have been recorded and are held in the Newsletter archives. Others of us have grown up with stories from our parents about their wartime experiences either fighting or being inventive with rations. For the younger generation the only knowledge about World War 2 will be found in school history books. Read more here...

Hedgerow Survey

During the summer months we will be conducting a survey of all the hardwood species growing in the hedgerows throughout the parish. This is part of a county wide survey that has been ongoing for ten years. So far Suffolk have recorded nearly three quarters of the hedgerows in the county which is the first survey of this size ever to be carried out and will provide a comprehensive record of what we have growing at this point in time. With the advent of Dutch Elm Disease and a new disease affecting oak trees it is vital to understand the effects that this will have on our local landscape. A small group of volunteers are required to undertake this survey, full training can be given and if you are interested please contact me for further details.

Moulton walks

Nearly a hundred people ranging in age from four to seventy-seven took part in the annual Moulton Community walks at the picturesque Suffolk village near Newmarket on Saturday 12th June. Conditions were perfect; sunny spells and not too hot.

Whilst the majority of amblers and ramblers were county based, the speed walking section of the programme attracted some of the south’s leading race walkers.

Although entered as amblers, there was some keen rivalry amongst Moulton villagers and four of them easily bettered the hour for the five mile walk. Rob Briggs was the first home recording 56.40, just four seconds ahead of Rod Spurgeon and Geoff Dobson, with John Grant not that far behind in 57.28. Mike Spragg 53.49 of Gt Yarmouth, Sue Smith 59.30 of King’s Lynn and Valerie Nutley 59.33 from Ipswich also bettered the hour.

Linda Spinks, Anne Scriven and Suzana Moosawi representing Moulton ladies finished second team in the women’s event, whilst the youngsters, many of them trying to ‘Heel and Toe’ for the first time were enthusiastic and showed promise.

Bedford’s Helen Middleton 46.46 and Portuguese walker Fransisco Reis 40.18 were fastest over the undulating course to Dalham windmill and back. Cath Duhig (Downham Market) 50.27 took third and Angie Alstrachen (Bury St.Edmunds) 51.59 fourth place in the women’s event.

Thanks to Newmarket Rotary, FHDC, WASP and Donna and Tony of the Kings Head for making the event possible. The Moulton Village Hall fund and St.Nicholas Hospice will each received a donation of £150. More here

Moulton Village Fun Day – Sunday 25th May

It was a wet and windy day, not the nice spring weather usually experienced on Fun Days, but with the support of the Village an incredible £3,400 was raised.

Moulton Community Walks – 14th June 2008

In near to perfect conditions a record number of walkers from all parts of the country took part in this year’s event sponsored by Newmarket Rotary and The West Anglia Sports Partnership.

The entry list contained some big names from the race walking world, but it was local walkers who entered as ramblers and amblers who caused a stir amongst the race walk enthusiasts. Geoff Dobson, Ann Ashby, Julia Frost, Agnieszka Bartyzell and Julie Middleton all completed the testing five mile course in under an hour, which is the first standard of achievement for race walking. The finishing list below shows that others were not far short of the mark, but most importantly, the satisfaction for most was completing their own personal challenge.

The thirteen children who participated in the junior walks all showed lots of endeavour and were presented with their medals by John Warhurst Commonwealth 20 mile champion in 1974.

European Masters Champion Ann Belchambers of Hillingdon was the first lady home stopping the clock at 49.14 and Aldershot ’s Nick Silvester also a European Masters Champion the first man in 39.16, whilst in the team competitions Enfield ladies and Ilford men collected the medals. Moulton ladies did so well that they grabbed the bronzes!

The racing Industry Team award was won by Julie Middleton, Carolynn Anderson and Kit Cunliffe representing the Darley Stud.

In addition to a number of former internationals there were eight games medallists on hand to mark the final race by sixty-nine year old four-time Olympian Paul Nihill who dominated World and British walking during the sixties and seventies setting records and winning medals at all the major Games.

STOP THE STACK!

Do You Value Your Peace and Quiet?

  • There are plans by the National Air Traffic Service (NATS) to route ALL Stansted western arrivals over this area.
  • Aircraft will hold or stack above this area while they wait to land at Stansted Airport.
  • Aircraft will circle at altitudes from 7,000ft up to 14,000ft. When in use the stack will always hold an aircraft at the lower level and up to 8 planes above when full.
  • Aircraft can be given clearance to descend beneath the stack at any point down to 4,000ft or they will leave the stack along the ‘red’ exit route. Villages under this red route will be significantly over flown. To see how you will be affected go to How this affects you on the NATS website, enter your postcode and select option 4 – proposed Stansted western arrivals.
  • At busy times there will be up to 33 planes per hour using the stack.
  • ‘Daytime’ flying is from 6am – 11pm.
  • Noise levels will be up to 69 decibels for noisiest aircraft at 4000ft, equivalent to a car driving 40 miles per hour 23ft away. The Government acknowledges that anything over 57 decibels causes ‘disturbance’.
  • NATS concede that the impact of such air traffic is worse over rural areas where there is less background noise, but say they are acting on Government guidance to avoid areas of dense population.
  • The number of aircraft using Stansted is set to increase. If plans for a second runway are approved aircraft numbers will increase even more.
  • If these plans are approved the planes will arrive next spring 2009.

For more info on these proposals and how to oppose them please visit http://sopaq.wordpress.com

It is really important that people respond individually to the proposals by 19th June 2008. Responses can be submitted via the NATS website www.consultation.nats.co.uk or by post to TCN Consultation, NATS freepost, NAT22750, Reading, RG1 4BR
